Atlantic Moves

Workshop in Azores, 1—7 March, 2026

A coastal map of Brittany shows fishing routes and sardine landings marked by red dots and connecting lines, overlaid on a shaded land–sea relief with a dense grid of offshore vectors.

The integration of oceanic and terrestrial perspectives remains a difficult yet central challenge to the project’s objectives. It is precisely this challenge that this weeklong workshop seeks to address, taking advantage of the Azorean Atlantic breeze.

In the face of the pressing challenges of today’s environmental crisis, the project draws on the material history of architecture as a tool to advance interdisciplinary research and, in doing so, to deepen our understanding of the ecological impacts of human activity. By analysing historical, geographical, ecological, and cultural factors, the project explores correlations between seemingly independent contexts, offering a renewed understanding of architecture—not only as a socially driven practice, but as an activity embedded in the planet’s ecological transformations.

The workshop programme will be structured around working sessions, collective discussions, and visits to key local sites related to fishing and natural history, including the fishing community of Rabo de Peixe, the Ponta Delgada fish market, and the Carlos Machado Museum. An open lecture will also take place at the Ponta Delgada Public Library on 3 March at 6 pm, organised in collaboration with Lotaçor. The session will be presented by architect and project coordinator André Tavares, highlighting the Azorean central position within the Atlantic fishing architecture dynamics.
